Silver 1000 postponed by rain

AUTO RACING: Silver 1000 rained out for only third time in its 36-year history; will be held Oct. 3-4
Vietnam veteran David Wheat holds a replica of an F-4B that his son-in-law made for him. The F4-B is the type of plane Wheat was flying in when he was shot down over North Vietnam. He ejected and was captured and taken to the prison camp known as the Hanoi Hilton, where John McCain also was a prisoner of war. Wheat was a POW for 7½ years. Duluth mayor: Branch libraries to stay open part-time; 4 layoffs averted

The branch libraries in the West Duluth and Woodland neighborhoods will stay open part time after Tuesday, while four library employees who were going to be laid off will be retained, the city announced today.

Despite the heroic efforts of a 52-year-old grandmother, a 3-year-old twin girl died in a Duluth Township fire Tuesday night.

Attorney General: Duluth school district should accept anti-'red plan' petition

The Duluth school district has been overruled regarding a petition submitted in April by a group opposing the district's long-term facilities plan.
