Kara Goucher has an early birthday party planned Saturday at home in Portland, Ore. She turns 30 on Wednesday and, with her family in town from Duluth, it's the perfect time to celebrate a milestone age, not to mention her first national championship.
So much for Minnesota’s reputation as the land of modest reserve. When it comes to the Fourth of July, Duluth showed Friday that it knows how to pull out all the stops.
Considering it spanned a couple of miles in Cloquet and not all over the world, the Carlton County Historical Society’s version of CBS’s “The Amazing Race,” was a pretty good one.
“ ‘November 280 Charlie Juliet, you are cleared for takeoff’ ... That’s got to be about the coolest thing in the world that I have ever heard,” said a grinning Bill King, vice president of business development at Cirrus Design Corp., as his company marked a milestone: the maiden flight of its first jet aircraft Thursday morning.
At first, many of the spectators — blanketing the Duluth hillside and jamming Bayfront Festival Park 20 years ago this Fourth of July — assumed the shower of sparks and bursts of color spraying from the ground were just part of the show. They cheered until the first explosion.
